Ruby - The Precious Gemstone

The Word Ruby is associated with the latin word "Rufus" meaning red. Rubies are also the July Birthstone (Capricorn) and is the Gemstone to celebrate 15th & 30th year marriage anniversary gift respectively.

Rubies in ancient cultures were believed to have mystical powers hidden within the Precious Gemstone and also a representation of passion, love and romance. Some cultures went as far as believing that the Gem Stone can aid in good health, wisdom and even luck in gambling of all things.

In biblical texts the Ruby was referred as the most Precious Gemstone and was called by the name "carbuncle" in those times. The Ruby (Carbuncle) was referred quite often in the King James version of the bible numerous times throughout the chapters.

A little known fact is that Rubies and Sapphires are identical in nature due to the mineral known as corundum. Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminum oxide. Rubies are the 2nd toughest gemstone next to the diamond and are more rare since they are only found in a handful of mines worldwide, Unlike the diamond which has abundance in many mining deposits that are found much more frequently, which also in most cases puts the Ruby in a category as "more expensive" than diamonds.

To back up this fact in October 1988 a 16 carat Ruby sold at Sotheby's Auction in New York for an amazing $227,301(US) per carat (over $3,000,000) and sizes over 5 carats are very rare indeed. This also confirms why you see Rubies as the dominant Gem in jewelry making and surrounded by all of the other precious Gemstones we all are familiar with. The Gem of love & passion, Rubies are hard to overlook.
