Most consumers have seen CZ Jewelry advertised as "Diamond Like" or "Simulated Diamond" referring to the appearance of Cubic Zirconia in the market. Cubic Zirconia is the alternative to the real diamond experience, without the "Big diamond price".
Cubic Zirconia is a solid mineral commonly used and synthesized as a diamond simulate or CZ Diamond. This cubic crystalline form of zirconium oxide is used as an alternative to the diamond because of its low cost, durability, and diamond like appearance. Since 1976 Cubic Zirconia has been more recognized in the Fashion Jewelry market, but its roots date back from 1892 in Sri Lanka.
The original name for Cubic Zirconia (CZ) was "baddeleyite" a rare zirconium oxide mineral named after Joseph Baddeley.
Zirconium Oxide (Cubic Zirconia) is highly resistant to chemical and thermal penetration and used because of its "Diamond like properties" which is used in Costume & Fashion jewelry like wedding bands, engagement rings, earrings and other fancy jewelry set in platinum, sterling silver and gold.
Determining whether its a Cubic Zirconia or a Diamond is difficult. A jeweler can identify the difference with a thermal conductivity tester since Cubic Zirconia has a low thermal conductivity, while the diamond has a higher thermal conductor properties.
Today, Cubic Zirconia is widely used in jewelry, manufacturing processes and even the world renowned Apple Computer products for their mobile device casings and are expanding the use of this mineral to other product offerings.
The consumer must be careful since it is hard to determine Cubic Zirconia from a Diamond, So be careful of the "to good to be true" deals on diamond jewelry and don't hesitate to have a well established jeweler determine whether you have a fake or the real thing for your peace of mind and assurance.
